Apologies. Our farm no longer has goats on the premise.
Myotonic Goats
Myotonic Goats are the only breed offered at Breedlove Farms. Myotonic Goats are also know as Tennessee Fainting Goats or Wooden-Leg Goats. We have focused on this breed for the past 8 years. This particular breed is known for its docility for children and muscling for meat production. This American breed was developed in the late 1800's. Originally this breed was placed with sheep as a means for predators such as coyotes, fox and bob cats to prey and the myotonic goats instead of their prized sheep. Depending on the muscling of the Myotonic goats have a direct correlation with the degree of stiffness. Myotonia congenita is the medical term to describe stiffening; this simply means that the condition is inherited from prior generations. Myotonia was probably originally the result of a genetic mutation as the evolutionary process took place. However, myotonia is no longer considered a defect. Myotonia occurs in the muscle fiber... not as a function of the central nervous system.... and causes no problem for the goats. Muscle stiffening may last from a few seconds up to a minute for full recovery. In the Fall of 2013 Breedlove Farms received USDA Scrapies Producer Status. We are the only Myotonic Goat Farm in the state of North Carolina to receive this status and one of only 6 Myotonic Goats Farms in the nation to receive the status. All goats on the property are registered through the Myotonic Goat Registry. However, we do offer myotonic goats for meat if arrangements are made prior to registration forms being processed.
Herd Health Our farm has been a completely closed farm since 2010, with the exception of new sire purchases. All new sire purchase that our farm compiles require a full certificate of health as well as complete blood panel completed prior to entry on the premises and a 90 day quarantine period. We routinely give CD/T shots & do Famache method for worming and do fecals. We use a combination of commercially available and organic wormers when necessary. Our herd tested negative for CAE, CL & Johnes. If buyer would like further testing, it will be at the expense of the purchaser to include veterinarian fees and handling fees. |
